A wonderful aqua antique patent medicine bottle. This is Dr. D. Jayne's Expectorant. The bottle is from circa 1880, is embossed and aqua in color. It is one of the many patent medicines on the market during the 1800s thru early 1900s. This bottle would make an excellent gift for a bottle collector.

Dr. David Jayne created Dr. Jayne's Family Medicines in Philadelphia, PA in the 1820s. The bottle is one of the many patent medicines produced in the 1800s to early 1900s that were popular at that time period. Few patent medicine companies can claim to be as successful and long-lived as the line of Dr. Jayne's Family Medicines. Dr. David Jayne was a pioneer in the field of proprietary medicine and built a business empire that was to last over 100 years. He died from pneumonia on March 5, 1866.

The advertising for this patent medicine stated "always keep Dr. Jayne's Expectorant in your house. Why? Because in cases of a sudden cold or a severe cough, nothing else so quickly and so certainly gives relief or ward off more dangerous consequences. If suffering from bronchitis, asthma, croup, whooping cough or consumption, where can more certain relief be found or a greater prospect of a cure be secured then the use of this Expectorant in conjunction with Dr. D. Jayne's Alternative? "


The indications or uses for this product was for coughs and colds.

Ingredients:

alcohol 15%
ammonium chloride -- It is mainly used as fertilizer and a flavoring agent in some types of licorice.
sodium salicylate -- non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug
licorice -- is used as a flavoring agent
ipecac -- is a drug that was once widely used as an expectorant and a rapid-acting emetic (a medicine or other substance that causes vomiting)
senega -- is used for inflammation of the throat, nose, and chest; for lung conditions including asthma, chronic bronchitis, and emphysema; and for rattlesnake bite.
cascara -- is used as a laxative for constipation,
acetate of squills -- Squill is used for lung diseases including chronic bronchitis, asthma with bronchitis, and whooping cough. Some people take squill to relieve fluid retention (edema), thin mucus, induce vomiting, or cause an abortion. In manufacturing, squill is used in pest control as rat poison.
aromatics -- One of a group of vegetable-based drugs having a fragrant odor and slightly stimulant properties.

This bottle is in excellent condition. There are no chips or cracks. The bottle has a raised bottom and there are bubbles in the glass from the manufacturing process.
