A hardcover children's book entitled Birth of an Island by Millicent E. Selsam. This is a 1959 First Edition. The cover boards are illustrated. The front cover illustration is a new volcano and the back cover has a seagull.

Describes the birth and development of a tropical island and its acquisition of plant and animal life.

Millicent Ellis Selsam (1912 – 1996) was an American children’s author. She was born in New York City May 30, 1912. She became interested in biology during her high school years. She took this interest to college when she studied biology at Brooklyn College. She was then offered a fellowship teaching at Columbia University while completing an M.A. in botany. After receiving her M.A., Selsam taught high school science before deciding to write science discovery books for children in 1946. Selsam wrote over a hundred children’s books and was married to the philosopher Howard Selsam. During her career, she was the recipient of many awards, including the 1965 Thomas Alva Edison Mass Media Award for best children's science book, Biography of an Atom.

Winifred Milius Lubell (1914 – 2012) was an American illustrator artist and writer. In her early adult years, Milius was active in the Communist Party of the United States and an advocate for social justice. She began her artistic career creating pen and ink portraits of victims of the Great Depression. From there she went on to examine the struggles of the working poor in the towns of the Eastern United States as well as producing drawings from the sit-down strikes in Chicago.

This book is in Used but in Very Good condition. The book has no rips or tears. The binding is completely intact and strong. The interior pages are clean. This was a library book so the printed name of the library is on the front flyleaf and the back inside cover. The back inside cover also has the library card holder and card. The book does show some rubbing from age and shelf wear.
