Antique Gravy Boat, J & G Meakin, Sunshine, Attached Underplate, Floral Pattern, England, Fine China

A lovely antique fine china boat from J & G Meakin in the Sunshine or Pilgrim pattern. Its design is flowers on a cream colored base. The underplate is attached. This would be a lovely addition to a table as a gravy/sauce boat. This is a really beautiful gravy boat and would make a great display piece as well as a useable serving dish and a great way to own a piece of the past.

James Meakin Sr. who was born in 1807 and died 1852 started potting some years earlier in Longton, England. In 1851 he was succeeded by his two sons. It was then that the firm J & G Meakin was founded in 1851 and named after his two sons James and George. The two brothers were quick to realize the potentials of the export market and the business grew rapidly. George went to America to set up the sales market. James remained in England and managed the pottery works and the shipping. Meakin's main product was white granite dinner and teaware. The 'Wheat Design' with its embossed wheat-ears and leaves was an early favorite since it was both tough and elegant. The Meakin company remained a family firm for 100 years and earned a reputation for treating its employees well. It was taken over by the Wedgwood group in 1970. In 2000 production under the Meakin name ceased.
