Antiquarian 1907 Hardcover Book, Snow-Bound, A Winters Idyl, J G Whittier, Poetry, Antique, Rare

A hardcover book entitled Snow-Bound A Winter's Idyl by John Greenleaf Whittier. This is a 1907 edition and is hard to find with this cover. I have found many of these books but none printed in 1907 by Hurst & Co. The cover boards are cream colored. There is a white and red rose on the front cover. Snow Bound is embossed in gold above the roses. The spine has the title embossed in gold.

The poem takes place in what is today known as the John Greenleaf Whittier Homestead, which still stands in Haverhill, Massachusetts. The poem chronicles a rural New England family as a snowstorm rages outside for three days. Stuck in their home for a week, the family members exchange stories by their roaring fire.

John Greenleaf Whittier (December 17, 1807 – September 7, 1892) was an American Quaker poet and advocate of the abolition of slavery in the United States. Frequently listed as one of the Fireside Poets, he was influenced by the Scottish poet Robert Burns. Whittier is remembered particularly for his anti-slavery writings as well as his book Snow-Bound.

This book is in Very Good Condition. There is wear to the cover in the form of rubbing from years of being loved but the edges are all sharp. There is a pulling on the binding between pages 220 and 221. On the inside front, flyleaf is an inscription of it being a gift from a gentleman to a 13-year-old boy in 1921. The pages are very clean with only the faintest of foxing (yellowing).
