Antique 1902 Hardcover Book, The Virginian, Owen Wister, First Edition, First Printing, Western, Adventure, Novel, Literature, Fiction, Illustrated

A antiquarian (antique) hardcover book entitled The Virginian. First Edition and First Printing with the words "set up and electrotyped April, 1902" printed on the copyright page. The cover boards are the original tan cloth with title in red on the front and on the spine. It has black and white illustrations. This would be a fantastic gift idea for a lover of westerns and antique book collectors.

The Virginian (otherwise titled The Virginian: A Horseman of the Plains) is a novel set in the Wild West. It was the first true fictional western ever written. The Virginian paved the way for many more westerns by such authors as Zane Grey, Louis L'Amour, and several others. The novel revolves around the Virginian and the life he lives. As well as describing the Virginian's conflict with his enemy Trampas, and his romance with the pretty schoolteacher Molly Stark Wood, Wister weaves a tale of action, violence, hate, revenge, love, and friendship.

Owen Wister (1860 – 1938) was an American writer and historian, considered the "father" of western fiction. He is best remembered for writing The Virginian and a biography of Ulysses S. Grant, a lieutenant general in the American Civil War later elected the 18th President of the United States. Wister had spent several summers in the American West, making his first trip to the Territory of Wyoming in 1885, planning to shoot big game, fish trout, meet the Indians, and spend nights in the wild. Like his friend Theodore 'Teddy' Roosevelt, Wister was fascinated with the culture, lore, and terrain of the region.
