This is one of the most adorable Piggy Banks I have ever found. It is made of ironstone and as such is very heavy. It is brown speckled (looks like a stone) and it has a crimped snout, ears that face forward, and a curly tail on its back. The coin bank empties from the bottom and has its original cork closure. This sweet little pig would make a wonderful gift or a great addition to a collection.
The piggy bank is the traditional name of a coin container normally used by children. The piggy bank is known to collectors as a still bank because it doesn't move. Piggy banks are usually made of ceramic or porcelain. They are generally painted and serve as a device to teach thrift and savings to children.
During The Middle Ages, in about 15th century, metal was expensive and seldom used for household wares. Instead, dishes and pots were made of an economical clay called "PYGG". Whenever people could save an extra coin, they dropped it into one of their clay jars. They called this their pygg bank or their piggy bank. The use of the name 'piggy bank' gave rise to its widely recognized 'pig' shape.
