1952 Hardcover Book, The Silver Chalice, Thomas B. Costain, First Edition, Literature, Fiction, Novel, Historical Fiction

A hardcover fictional novel by Thomas B. Costain. It is entitled The Silver Chalice. This is a 1952 First Edition. The book's hardcover is blue cloth with the title in silver on a black square on the spine.

The Silver Chalice is the fictional story of the making of a silver chalice to hold the Holy Grail (itself here fused with the Holy Chalice) and includes 1st century biblical and historical figures: Luke, Joseph of Arimathea, Simon Magus and his companion Helena, and the apostle Peter. Two years after its publication, Warner Bros. released a feature adaptation of the book. The film starred Paul Newman, in his first studio role, as Basil the craftsman. First published in 1952, this classic recounts the story of Basil, a young silversmith, who is commissioned by the apostle Luke to fashion a holder for the cup Jesus used at the Last Supper. The Silver Chalice was a top best-selling fiction title of 1953 in the United States, atop the New York Times Best Seller List from September 7, 1952, to March 8, 1953, and remaining 64 weeks on the list until October 25, 1953.

Thomas Bertram Costain (1885 – 1965) was a Canadian journalist who became a best-selling author of historical novels at the age of 57.

Very Good: Describes a book that shows some small signs of wear - but no tears - on either binding or paper. Any defects should be noted by the seller.

Good: Describes the average used book that has all pages or leaves present. Any defects should be noted by the seller.

Fair: Worn book that has complete text pages (including those with maps or plates) but may lack endpapers, half-title, etc. Binding, jacket (if any), etc., may also be worn. All defects should be noted.
