1985 Children's Hardcover Book, Only One Woof, James Harriot, Fiction, Collectible, Animal Story, Children's Classic, Dog Story, Illustrated

A wonderful children's hardcover book called Only One Woof by James Harriot. First printed in 1974 this is a second repeat printing. The illustrations are wonderfully done by Peter Barrett.

This story is about the lifelong friendship between two sheepdog brothers, Sweep and Gyp. The two puppies grew up playing together and herding. Their owner, Mr. Wilkin, trained sheepdogs for competitions and was very successful in this endeavor. The dogs looked similar, but the one thing that was different between them was that Gyp never barked. Though the dogs had grown up together, a neighbor of Mr. Wilkin’s eventually bought Sweep, who was farther along in his training and helped him get ready for competitions. Gyp, who was never as strong a competitor as Sweep, stayed behind to help his owner herd sheep and cattle. In the months that passed, Gyp still never barked, but one day the author went to a sheepdog competition where Mr. Wilkin and Gyp had come to watch. Much to their surprise, Sweep and his owner had come to compete, and when Sweep began his part, everyone could see that no other dog was like him. When Sweep finished successfully, Gyp, who had been watching quietly, let out a single bark. Sweep and Gyp were happily reunited, and after that competition, Gyp never barked again.

James Alfred Wight, OBE, FRCVS (1916 – 1995), known by the pen name James Herriot, was a British veterinary surgeon and writer who used his many years of experiences as a veterinary surgeon to write a series of books consisting of stories about animals and their owners.
