1876 Bryce Walker Maltese Covered Compote, EAPG, Jacob’s Ladder

$289.00

There are antique glass pieces… and then there are pieces that define an era. This covered compote was introduced in 1876 by Bryce, Walker & Company of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The pattern is known as MALTESE (OMN), also called Jacob’s Ladder, patented June 13, 1876 by John Bryce. The bold ladder and strawberry diamond design is unmistakably early pressed glass — deeply molded, architectural, and confident in its detail. The domed lid is crowned with a sharply defined Maltese Cross finial, the defining feature of this historic pattern. An example of this exact pattern resides in the collection of the Corning Museum of Glass, confirming its place in documented American glass history. Standing 11½ inches tall with the cover in place, this is not a small decorative dish. It is a statement piece — the kind that would have anchored a formal Victorian table. For collectors of Bryce glass, early EAPG, or museum-documented American patterns, this is a significant example.

Condition is exceptional for its age.
• No chips
• No cracks
• No repairs
• No flea bites
• No flakes
• Clean rim
• Clean flange
• Finial sharp and intact
• Only honest utensil wear inside the bowl from use
It is increasingly difficult to find 1870s covered pressed glass with the original lid present — and even more difficult to find one preserved at this level.

This is early American pressed glass at its finest — patented, documented, and beautifully preserved.

Measurements:
• 11½ inches high with cover
• 7½ inches high without cover
• 7½ inches in diameter

This would make a great wedding or holiday gift. A great piece to add to your collection to entertain in style. A wonderful antique compote for the collector of antique glass.
