Ohio Flint Glass Company produced this pressed glass compote during the height of America’s Victorian glass era. Over a century later, it still carries the crisp detail and confident design that made pressed glass so popular at the turn of the century. There is something about early pressed glass that still feels right on a table more than a century later. This antique Early American Pressed Glass compote dates to the late 1800s, when glassmakers in the Midwest were producing sturdy, beautiful tableware meant to be used — not just admired. The repeating five-point stars, diamond crosshatch panels, and graceful scalloped rim catch the light in a way only old glass can. It has that unmistakable sparkle that modern reproductions just don’t quite achieve. Standing 5 inches tall with a generous 7½ inch diameter, this pedestal bowl would have originally held fruit, sugared nuts, or jelly at the center of the table. Today it works just as beautifully as a fruit bowl, seasonal centerpiece, candle display, or simply sitting in a window where the light can do its work. The pattern is often referred to as a Stars and Diamond variation and was produced during the height of the pressed glass era, circa 1885–1905. Examples of this pattern are documented in the collection of the Corning Museum of Glass, preserving its place in American glassmaking history. A beautiful piece of history ready for another century on the table.
Condition is Very Good for its age.
No chips. No cracks. It does have utensil marks and some light flea bites on the scalloped edge. This is honest 19th-century American tableware — sturdy, decorative, and still entirely usable.
